Censorship of films has relaxed immensely from the ban heavy days of the video nasties. Where before the smallest hint of gore or sex could get you a strict adult rating or in worst case scenario, a complete ban in the name of public decency; the kind of things directors can get away with now is something to be proud about. As adults we should have the freedom to make a choice about the kind of entertainment we choose to consume. The idea that a nanny somewhere decides what is morally acceptable is alien in the modern internet age. When a film is censored or has its distribution restricted, whatever the reasons are, you can rely on the ratings board to give a reasoned answer for their decision. You might not agree with it but you have to accept that there is a reason. But globally, reasons for bans vary from country to country. Some acts of censorship have nothing to do with protecting the public but are political in nature. And that is why they seem a misuse of power and an abuse of the process So it might not surprise you that some films that have gone on to be considered classics, they had a hard time getting released in some countries due to decisions that can be best classed as insane and stupid. Cultural sensibilities aside, there is only so much give before the ban seems ridiculous that makes you feel sorry for the people who have to cope with higher powers making morality decisions on their behalf. But it makes a good list, so in celebration of the daftness, here are 10 films that were banned for stupid reasons.
