10 Genuinely Awesome Scenes In Otherwise Awful Movies
6. Lethal Weapon 4 - Riggs And Leo In The Cemetery
I am a big Lethal Weapon fan and I like them all, this film included, however it became clear with the release of the fourth entry in the franchise, that Riggs and Murtaugh had in fact become too old. The creativity seemed to be sapping away with the previous film and that trend continued here and in an attempt to bring the laughs and more comedy Chris Rock was cast as a young cop. It did not work. Rocks presence added nothing but throwaway and repetitive jokes, he was not all that was wrong with the movie but he is a standout example of what was. His entire role seemed like the action movie equivalent to the cute kid syndrome that inflicts the later years of certain sitcoms. Thankfully the writers seemed to realise the time had come for the end and made sure the story of Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh came to a fitting conclusion. The scene that brought the most closure does not include Roger at all, rather it is an emotional sequence between Riggs and Leo, as the former finally says goodbye to his dead wife. The death of Riggss wife has played an important role throughout the entire series, from the moment we met him in the first film he was struggling to cope without her, he was suicidal. Despite how far he had come, despite the fact that he had a baby on the way, Riggs was still struggling with the loss of his wife. He came to her grave to tell her he was moving on with a new woman but still could not let her go, and then came Leo. Leo is wonderfully played by Joe Pesci but clearly was shoe horned into the third film. Here however he played a vital role, he had something to do. Relaying the story of an unhappy childhood and how he accidentally killed his pet frog could have come off as ridiculous if played by a lesser actor, but Pesci handles it perfectly and finally gives Riggs the impetus he needs to move on with his life.
