Ana Lily Amipours directorial debut is quite simply a work of absolute beauty. An exceptional and seamless amalgamation of genres and themes - horror, film noir, silent cinema and Gothicism are all wrapped up in a stunning monochrome aesthetic. Sheila Vand is enchanting as the alluring and enigmatic spectre that haunts the streets of the fictional Iranian ghost town Bad City. The haunting, chador-clad girl eventually crosses paths with a troubled man named Arash (Arash Marandi), who is caring for his heroin-addicted father and facing hassle from the local drug gang. The two spark a poignant connection in a world they both seem utterly isolated from. Everything about the film is amazing; the cinematography is stunning, the sound design provides perfect exposition and a deep-set subversive theme of feminism reacting against the patriarchy builds and builds, making for something intelligent and breathtaking.
