10 Great Movies Ruined By A Moronic Release Date

7. Gangs of New York - (December 20th, 2002)

It's been eleven years since this film was released near Christmas-time and poor ol€™ Leo still cannot catch a break and win that ever-elusive Oscar. That€™s alright Leo, we are still rooting for you. But what happened with Gangs of New York? Was it that people don€™t love spending their Christmas holiday watching bloody brawls or hearing every ethnicity in the world get brutally insulted instead of sharing a holiday ham with the in-laws (although for some it may be one-in-the-same)? While I think some of that contributes to this film done by the great Scorsese, I say the bigger picture has to do with the one ring to rule them all. When you are opening against Peter Jackson€™s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, you should not be surprised that you premiere in fourth place in the box office. I know that Scorsese and DiCaprio go together like Burton and Depp, and it€™s tough to find a spot favorable for an Oscar nod in December, but GONY just could not make it happen with such a moronic release date.
