It's been eleven years since this film was released near Christmas-time and poor ol Leo still cannot catch a break and win that ever-elusive Oscar. Thats alright Leo, we are still rooting for you. But what happened with Gangs of New York? Was it that people dont love spending their Christmas holiday watching bloody brawls or hearing every ethnicity in the world get brutally insulted instead of sharing a holiday ham with the in-laws (although for some it may be one-in-the-same)? While I think some of that contributes to this film done by the great Scorsese, I say the bigger picture has to do with the one ring to rule them all. When you are opening against Peter Jacksons The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, you should not be surprised that you premiere in fourth place in the box office. I know that Scorsese and DiCaprio go together like Burton and Depp, and its tough to find a spot favorable for an Oscar nod in December, but GONY just could not make it happen with such a moronic release date.
