5. Virgin River (2019 - Present) - Daniel Gillies

Daniel Gillies originated the character of Elijah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries before then going on to play the vampire throughout all five seasons of spin-off show The Originals. Netflix viewers may have seen Daniel more recently in the streaming services' romantic drama Virgin River, which debuted its third season this summer.

Based on the Virgin River books by Robyn Carr, the series revolves around midwife and nurse Mel who moves to the small town of Virgin River in Northern California in a bid to start over. Like any good drama, the move sends her on a journey of self-discovery.

Daniel portrays Mel's late husband Mark, who appears in flashbacks throughout the seasons. It's Mark's death which actually prompts Mel's move. Virgin River is similar in tone to This Is Us as it can be both comforting and extremely cathartic which is something we all need from time to time.

Storylines which centre on 'small town life' can oftentimes be dull or predictable, but that's not the case here. Virgin River is well-written, well acted, and will leave you feeling better and happier than you felt before you pressed play. The good news is that the show has already been renewed for two more seasons.
