Captain Jack Sparrow has sacrificed himself, jumping into the jaws of the Kraken and taking the Black Pearl with him. The rest of the crew return to Tia Dalma, wondering how they can possibly defeat Davy Jones and rescue Jack. Enter Barbossa in the the surprise twist, returned from the dead after the events of The Curse Of The Black Pearl. Was this villain now an ally and hero? It wasn't a cliffhanger as epic as some on this list but it certainly left fans excited for what was to come, even if this sequel hadn't quite lived up to the first Pirates film. Killing off the lead character was a bold move; without Johnny Depp's mesmerising performance as Jack Sparrow the magic of the Pirates films was instantly gone. So having Rush back raised the anticipation for the third film tenfold. Adding in the return of Barbossa was the icing on the cake. It is just a shame - like the Matrix films - that no sequel came close to matching the original. Will Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales be a return to form? Hopefully, but after the fourth film it will have an uphill battle to achieve that.
