6. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996): Frollo's Death Scene
I am just going to say it. I really, really, really miss this fairly recent golden age of Disney traditional animated movies. As much as I love Pixar movies, I wouldn't say I love them any more than the classic Disney films from the 90's. Maybe it is somewhat to do with the fact that I was a child during the 90's which means I hold a strong place in my heart for many children movies during that decade... but Disney produced some real stunning films in this decade didn't they. Perhaps none more so than my all time favorite Disney film... The Hunchback of Notre Dame. If you have only seen this film as a child you are really missing out on a surprisingly mature and adult themed Disney movie with themes that you couldn't even grasp to understand as a child. This is my favorite Disney movies for two reasons. The first is that it doesn't set ridiculous standards, and most of the things that happen throughout this film reflect real life fairly accurately. As much as you may have wanted Quasimodo to end up with the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda at the end of the film... real life will tell you that this was never going to happen, and a beautiful woman like Esmeralda was always going to end up with the incredibly handsome and dashing Captain Pheobus. The second reason is because the antagonist of this movie is the most complex and believably sinister villain of them all. Judge Frollo is a terrible man, who although took in Quasimodo as a child and raised him kind of as his own child, he did lock him away in a bell tower, kill his mother and almost drown him when he first looked at his disfigured face. If any Disney villain deserved to be symbolically sucked into a fiery hell it is this one.
