DVDs blew VHS tapes into the Stone Age when they first arrived on the scene, all shiny and new, complete with HD visuals and no obligation to rewind afterwards. Blu-ray took things up a notch one generation later, future-proofing the disc format.
Given that everyone has a subscription to Netflix these days, even Blu-ray is starting to feel old-school. A significant number of film fans no longer purchase physical copies of their favourite movies, preferring to stream content to their various devices.
It would be a crying shame if discs were to die out entirely, and not just for the avid collectors out there. There are many things they can offer that streaming services cannot, like oodles of extra features. Deleted scenes, blooper reels and other bonuses can be the highlights of a home media release.
Not all Blu-ray extras are staring you in the face. Some are hidden away, requiring the user to perform menu screen trickery, and these are often the most rewarding of all.
This is the kind of stuff you won't find tucked away on the Netflix menu screens.
10. The THX Spoof - The Simpsons Movie
Homer makes an enemy of the THX mascot in this hidden Easter egg found on The Simpsons Movie DVD and Blu-ray. It all kicks off when the robot's logo tinkering disturbs his siesta, and the animation icon attempts to turn him to scrap in retaliation.
The scene is a riff on the THX intro that kicks off most movies which use the sound technology, in which this little robot performs maintenance on the branding.
You can find this extra by highlighting the English 5.1. Dolby Digital option on the menu screen and hitting left. It's an amusing scene that all Simpsons fans should see.
