10 Hidden Gem Indie Horror Movies You MUST Watch
3. Willard
Loosely based on Stephen Gilbert's Ratman Notebooks, Willard follows a social outcast (Crispin Glover), who has a natural kinship for rodents. Tired of being shunned by society, Willard uses his furry friends to exact revenge on everybody who's wronged him.
Even though Glover hit it big as George McFly in Back to the Future, the quirky star never had much luck in his acting career. This is a shame, since Glover gives a career-best performance here.
Although his outlandish portrayal could be hammy, Glover is convincing as a man at the end of his rope who's decided to go full supervillain. He maintains such a perfect balance between cringe-worthily awkward and gleefully wicked, it's like watching a Joker origin story.
Although the 1971 adaptation felt rooted in reality, this version is more larger-than-life, which works in the movie's favour due to the oddball premise. By cranking everything up to 11, the filmmakers got to devise some memorable and truly horrifying sequences involving the titular character and his rodent army.
Due to the positive reviews, (especially surrounding Glover's performance), the dark comedy should've become a cult-classic.
