How often do you sit down to watch a movie and struggle to decide what you want? Sometimes, you crash on the sofa and think, "hey, I want a little laugh", but you might also think, "oooh, I want something scary though!". Typically, these contrasting ideas force you to find a compromise. But, that's not always the case, as there are some stunning horror movies out there that will freak you out and crack you up in equal measure.

Comedy and horror go together like bacon and maple syrup. They couldn't be further apart on paper, but in execution *chef's kiss*. Seeing the funnier side of scary movies is a great way to open the genre up and give it some breathing room. This has led to spectacular hybrids of comedy & horror, with classics like Shaun of the Dead and What We Do In The Shadows having plenty of fun with the combo.

Still, beneath more popular titles like that comes an ocean of sick and twisted movies that flew under the radar. The following ten are fantastic examples of this, as they don't quite get the credit they deserve for filling you with pain from both laughter and fear.

10. Taxidermia (2006)

With a title like that, it's not hard to predict some rather perverse stuff appearing in this film. But, even so, you have no idea what kind of nightmares await you in this surreal Hungarian horror comedy.

The film tells the story of three generations of men. The first is a perverted WWII orderly, the second is a champion speed-eater, and the last is a gifted taxidermist. While the flick tells the story of their misadventures, it's also an allegory of the history of Hungary, all the way through WWII to the modern day - well, modern as it was in 2006.

Taxidermia is visually stimulating, not just in a violent body horror kind of way, but artistically as well. There's an undeniable sense of imagination in the film, as the imagery it conjures up is grand and quirky, and the camera techniques (such as shot composition and movements) are incredibly creative.

It's also a kaleidoscope of emotions, as the dark sense of humour will get you laughing, the grotesque imagery will unsettle your stomach, and the surprisingly touching moments will come for your heart. Still, It's terrifying first and foremost, thanks to the sheer amount of disturbing elements - like bestiality, violence and self-surgery.
