It's hard to imagine what the world of movies was like before Jack Sparrow. Over the course of four films (with another on the way) the character has become a cultural icon, and pretty much single-handedly brought in $5.4 billion at the global box office. Though Johnny Depp is often criticized for the way his portrayal of the pirate has leaked into other roles and taken over his acting career, there's no denying that he's incredibly fun to watch when he's playing Sparrow. And let's not forget, the role may have become a bit of a schtick now, but it gained him an Oscar nomination when The Curse of the Black Pearl came out in 2003. Jack started out as more of a supporting character in the first film, then slowly took over the series as it went along; he's clearly the biggest draw for audiences and the reason we keep coming back to these films again and again. Jack may be placed in the "hero" role again and again, but he's definitely not a very good guy. He's a pirate, after all, guilty of an innumerable amount of crimes, who often does things solely for his own good. The fact that he's often given the responsibility of stopping dangerous men is something that kind of falls into his lap, rather than being something he sets out to do.
