For a majority of David Lynch's Blue Velvet the character of Sandy Williams (played by Laura Dern) is rather forgettable, but this changes dramatically during a scene late in the film when star Isabella Rossellini shows up (battered, bruised and totally nude) at the door of the character played by Kyle MacLachlan. Clearly disturbed, Dern's Sandy soon erupts into a violent crying jag, which unquestionably contains one of the most classic cry-faces in modern cinema. When one watches Dern's face during this scene it's hard not to be distracted, not least because her acting choices are astoundingly over the top. Dern's mouth turns downward into a distressingly inhumane shape, almost like an inverted banana. This, paired with her character's guttural spasms of horror (not to mention that 80s fright wig), imbues the scene with an unfortunately comedic element, something which does partially inhibit the power of Rossellini's brave performance.
