10 Horror Movie Franchises That Need To End
5. I Spit On Your Grave
Remaking the rape/revenge movie Roger Ebert described as “sick, reprehensible and contemptible” is one thing, but turning it into a franchise where the sole element of interest is watching a brutalized woman murder her attackers is beyond a joke.
No classic, Meir Zarchi’s 1978 caused walkouts by crew members and was picketed by feminists on release, but the most interesting thing you can say about about the 2010 remake is that it was too dull to stir up any controversy. It was a minor hit, however, so in 2013 the imaginatively titled I Spit On Your Grave 2 told the same story, which due to budgetary constraints took place in Bulgaria.
I Spit On Your Grave: Vengeance Is Mine brings back the heroine from the 2010 original, only this time her friend is brutally murdered by thugs, and you can probably figure out the rest of the story for yourself. A remake and two sequels weren’t enough, however, so the aptly-titled I Spit On Your Grave: Déjà vu, an official sequel to Zarchi’s 1978 film, is currently in post-production.
Once again directed by Zarchi, the movie reunites him with lead actress Camille Keaton, who by the time the picture opens will be celebrating her 70th birthday. Can you say “overkill”?
