10 Horror Movie Openings That Pissed Everyone Off

3. Chief Brody Dies Off-Screen - Jaws: The Revenge

The fourth Jaws film, Jaws: The Revenge, is often held to be one of the worst sequels of all time, and certainly where long-in-the-tooth follow-ups to massively beloved films are concerned.

But even before Jaws IV gets into its howlingly silly plot about a vengeance-filled shark targeting the remnants of the Brody family, the opening scene reveals that the series' beloved hero has died a totally mundane off-screen death.

Amity Island's former police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) is confirmed to have died from a heart attack in the opening moments, and a few minutes later his widow Ellen (Lorraine Gary) claims that it was the "fear" of another shark attack which sent him to an early grave.

It's a horribly unceremonious, bitterly disappointing end for a much-loved character, and to rub salt in the wound further, his youngest son Sean (Mitchell Anderson) is then killed by a shark. Yikes.
