9. The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Set some six years after the events of the first film, The Conjuring 2 again focuses on unexplained phenomena investigated by real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson).

Taking place in an otherwise uneventful London suburb, this spooky sequel offers some of the franchise’s most well-crafted jump scares, as Ed and Lorraine interrogate a mother who claims that her young daughter has become possessed.

Most notably, the film first introduces audiences to the ‘Nun’ (actually the demon, Valak), now a veritable horror icon in her own right, who haunts the family alongside a host of terrifying spirits and demons.

Unlike other films in the Conjuring series (which includes both The Nun (2018) and Annabelle (2014)), The Conjuring 2 does not merely rely on repetitive jump scares to frighten its audience.
