10 Horror Movies That Sound Terrible (But Are Actually Great)

2. Annabelle

From the day it was announced, everyone saw Annabelle as a really cynical production. The Conjuring was a success partially for its "less is more" approach, and there's a great scene where James Wan makes you afraid of a doll in just a few minutes. By not giving her much screen time, that actually makes it more effective. Now they're giving her an entire movie? Just...why?

You might even have read reviews and figured your initial assumption was correct, as it holds a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to The Conjuring's 86%. While Annabelle is definitely not as good of a movie, those who give it a chance should still find a lot to love. Interestingly enough, the film is not really a killer doll story. Instead, it's more of a possession/demon story, and it just happens that the evil is connected to the doll. That's a wise decision, as showing Annabelle running around like Chucky would definitely make her less scary. It's all about seeing her lying there perfectly still.

There are quite a few similarities to Rosemary's Baby, and the main character is even named Mia in a nod to Mia Farrow. It won't blow your socks off, but for a spinoff thrown together in just one year, Annabelle is pretty solid. The elevator sequence in particular makes the whole thing worth it.
