2. Deep Rising

Secret connections can be incredibly fun, whether they ultimately pay off or not. Many thought Life was set to be a prequel of sorts for Venom, and though it ultimately wasn't, it was a great fan theory. Of course the reveal that Split was a sequel to Unbreakable was huge as well.

Then, there is Deep Rising. The 1998 monster flick saw Treat Williams and Famke Janssen up against a diabolical and terrifying leviathan of the sea. When the three survivors washed up on shore, there came the secret tease of yet another monster, one of the most famous in the history of cinema.

Just before the credits rolled on the film, from the island on which they found themselves came a deafening roar that was reportedly supposed to be that of King Kong. Seven years before Peter Jackson's take on the story, this was what Skull Island could have looked like.

While it was an interesting idea, Deep Rising's ultimate financial shortcomings killed any idea of sequel immediately, which arguably is for the best. 2005's King Kong may not have been the best film Jackson has ever produced, but the aesthetics on the beast alone would have been enough for it to be worth that extra few years wait.
