On average we spend 26 years of our lives doing this, over 200,000 hours, considerably more than just 40 winks. It’s something we never get tired of, something we can always rely on to make us feel better. It is of course: sleeping.

It’s such a big, unavoidable part of all of our lives - but what happens when sleeping suddenly becomes anything but relaxing? Sleep and dreams can be the perfect vehicles for a bit of horror.

There’s potential for haunting nightmares or some sinister sleep walking, and it’s all made that little bit more terrifying because we’ll have to sleep at some point after watching!

This collection of films is just a small sample of the movies out there that will make you want to never sleep again.

They say dying in your sleep is meant to be a peaceful way to go, but from what these films suggest that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. So next time you go for a quick nap, keep in mind that you might actually be entering your eternal slumber...

10. Before I Wake

When you’re a kid and you have a bad dream, one of the simplest and most reassuring things your parents can say to you is that it is ‘just a dream’ and that ‘it can’t hurt you in real life.’ Imagine, however, that somehow your dreams became a reality and could cause untold damage in the waking world.

Cody is a young orphaned child, adopted by a couple who recently lost their own young son in an unfortunate accident. They find on taking him in that anything he dreams can materialise in real life - both good and bad things.

What starts off as a beautiful display of colourful butterflies soon gives way to the appearances of the nightmarish creatures haunting Cody’s dreams. Whilst poor Cody sleeps and dreams about scary things, those around him are subjected to their wrath in real time.

Imagine if every night before you went to sleep you had to worry about having nightmares, not only for your own sake but for your loved ones too. What’s just a bad dream for you can be the end of the line for them…
