2. Bird Box

Netflix's viral smash hit Bird Box saw a woman, Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock), attempting to protect herself and her two children from mysterious entities which cause anyone who sees them to promptly commit suicide.

It's a brilliant hook for a movie, no doubt, and though not every aspect of Eric Heisserer's script quite hits the mark, director Susanne Bier makes the smart, possibly budget-motivated decision not to show the creatures.

Beyond ensuring we weren't forced to suffer through a fleet of goofy CGI monstrosities per the film's modest $20 million price tag, it also helped put the audience in the same position as the characters, unable to catch a glimpse of the insurgent force.

Curiously, however, the original plan was indeed to show them for a single nightmare scene in which Malorie encounters one in her house.

Bier ultimately decided that the scene, which depicted the creatures as bloated, cherub-like critters, was just too silly to pass muster.

Clearly it was the right call, and didn't hamper the movie's success one bit.
