10 Horror Movies You Really Wanted To Like (But Actually Couldn’t)
2. Slender Man
In hindsight, it's surreal how swiftly Slender Man took the world by storm. Initially created in a Something Awful forum post in 2009, the faceless horror took on a life of its own, spawning a slew of merchandise, short films, and video games.
So when it was announced the dapper entity was making his way to the big screen, it looked like Slender Man's popularity was about to peak. If the paranormal frightfest was a hit, it could open the gates for other Creepypastas getting adapted to film.
Too bad Slender Man was an outright disaster. In a nutshell, this failed adaptation completely misses the point of what made the mysterious figure unnerving in the first place. Slender Man's power lies in his suggestibility, subtlety, and mystery.
Sadly but not surprisingly, this movie discards this concept, turning the titular villain into a generic boogeyman. Coupled with the glacial pacing, derivative writing, cheap jump-scares, and sanitised violence, there's nothing redeemable about this clunker.
Not only did this abomination fail to capture the spirit of the IP, it tainted the Creepypasta medium, meaning movie studios are less likely to greenlight a similar story.
