Though there have been talks of an official adaptation of the Hasbro board game Hungry Hungry Hippos for well over a decade, an unrelated horror film centered around a killer hippo is currently shooting in Malta.

Hungry revolves around a hapless group of vacationers who end up assailed by a bloodthirsty hippo while holidaying in the Louisiana swamplands, with director James Nunn (Shark Bait) helming the production.

It sounds like an absolute farce on paper given hippos' common presentation in pop culture as lazy, sleepy, even "harmless" creatures.

However, it's worth remembering that they're actually one of the most dangerous land animals on Earth, with their speed, strength, and tough skin making them responsible for 500 human deaths per year in Africa alone.

While pulling this creature feature off on a low budget certainly presents its challenges, if successful it could end up doing for hippos what Jaws did for sharks, entirely rewriting their perception in society - for better or worse.
