The latest entry into the Despicable Me franchise was the highest-grossing of the three core movies, yet even with the pervasive popularity of Gru (Steve Carell) and his Minions, Aquaman was still able to prevail.

Only 2015's Minions spin-off has managed to out-do Aquaman, cracking an absolutely stunning $1.16 billion worldwide, without much help from China no less.

With the Despicable Me franchise having the perfect marketing gimmick behind it - whose aunt hasn't shared a Minions meme by now? - it's really quite staggering that Aquaman is posting an even broader appeal.
