There has always been a certain amount of pomposity when it comes to action movies. To many, they are inconsequential, macho nonsense, where the guys flex their muscles and the girls only appear from the waist downwards. To many, though, they are 90 minutes of pure exhilaration. 90 minutes that give you an adrenaline rush on otherwise boring Friday nights. For most boys, action movies are an introduction to cinema, whether you grew up in the 80s and saw Arnold Schwarzenegger wreaking havoc with the largest gun imaginable, or in recent years, witnessed a new breed of action stars such as Jason Statham exhibit an exotic range of martial arts moves for your pure pleasure. Action movies often live or die with their star. Action movies need a leading man capable of charismatically commanding the screen, quipping the one liners without leaving the audience cringing and look the coolest man in the world whilst delivering a roundhouse kick to the sternum. Some men were born to be on-screen action heroes, dominating the cinema with a scowl and ripped muscles, but because of the nature of the genre, many actors' ability to carry an action flick is grossly underrated by the wider film community, who see them as a dalliance in adolescent fantasy.
