When you hear The Blue Danube, your head will undoubtedly jump to one of two actions. The first is, obviously, waltzing, seeing as thats what the song is. After youve seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, however, a different but just as elegant type of movement comes to mind on a much bigger scale. After the most monumental jump cut in film takes us from prehistoric man to the age of space travel, a ship cruises by, we tilt up across the surface of the Earth and a wheel steadily rotates to soothing music of Johann Strauss. It really takes something to make The Blue Danube intrinsically paired with 2001 over every other film its featured in, considering it has an animated film all to its own but this sequence is really that good. 2001 can sometimes be a difficult film to watch (especially in its entirety) but The Blue Danube gives us a brilliant glimpse into the future, showing the human race reaching out across the stars to some of its greatest classical music.
