The Star Wars' galaxy is obviously vast, however, in the original film we actually only visit two planets (a third is seen blown to bits) and the Death Star. It has almost become a part of the franchise's DNA that each film sees the addition of at least one more planet to the canon.

Hoth, Endor, Naboo, Geonosis, Mustafar, Jakku, Crait and Exagol are all planets with huge pop culture significance, exploring the vast diversity of the galaxy.

With a new planet per film, there is at least 10 times that many new alien species. Each film pushes the Lucasfilm production team to create new worlds and new species to inhabit them. Without sequel films, we would never have met Wampas, Ewoks, Gungans or Sullustans.

Although it must be said, the galaxy far, far away isn't short on desert planets...
