9. Eddington

If you're watching an Ari Aster film, chances are high that you're going to be subjected to a bleak story, including the ending, and the same goes for anything based in and around 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. So of course, Eddington, Ari Aster's piece set during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic was bleak.

The story pulled so much from the feeling of the 2020 world, including uncertainty, paranoia, chaos, and misinformation, in what seemed on the surface to be a very politically driven piece. However, almost hidden under all of these moving pieces was the real story.

Everything else in the film acts almost as a misdirect against the real conflict which is the building over the data center in Eddington, something that is ultimately achieved and was very deliberately used as the final shot. The real war depicted in Aster's fourth feature outing is that against AI.

There will be another on this list that takes on artificial intelligence, with Aster doing so in a much more ambiguous way, though the director himself described the overwhelming emotion as "powerlessness and dread". Eddington may not be the man's strongest work, but it's hard to deny the message.
