10 Incredibly Subtle Ways Movies Gave Away Their Endings
7. Split's Poster Ruins The Twist
There's a rich history of movies being spoiled by trailers and posters, because marketing companies don't really seem to care about the sanctity of plot secrets and they just want to make sure as many people as possible see the movie. That's also why trailers now just brazenly ruin stuff for funsies.
But there can be art in the blatant spoil, as cinematic trickster M Night Shyamalan proved with his return to relevance, Split. The film's success mostly hinged on the final scene twist that revealed that the Beast's world was the same as superhero David Dunn and vulnerable supervillain Mr Glass. That set up a threequel that will be far more widely seen than Split and which has thrust Shyamalan back into the spotlight.
And we should have all seen it coming, given that the poster for Split - starring a moody James McAvoy with two different coloured eyes - has a cracked glass effect that lines up almost perfectly with the same gimmick on the Unbreakable poster. They are effectively both under one pane of glass, confirming their existence in the same universe.
