Hollywood is a tough town, and there's no way to sugar coat this: Johnny Depp has ruined his career. His insistence on constantly collaborating with Tim Burton to give the same old tired, eccentric performances in over half a dozen films in as many years has turned him into a joke. Which is a shame, because once upon a time he was one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation. If you go back and watch him in Ed Wood, he's such a bright, natural talent. And honestly, he probably should have won an award for that movie. But over the past decade and a half, he's consistently taken the same type of characters which allowed him to be lazy and collect a fat paycheck. And that choice to sacrifice his creative integrity, something that used to mean a lot to him, has cost him the one thing that matters most in the eyes of the people handing out the little gold statues: his legitimacy as an actor. Even if he does get his act together and start turning in great performances again, it's going to take a lot to repair his damaged reputation.
