10 Inevitable Movie Reboots And How To Make Them Not Suck

By Shaun Munro /

It's widely accepted that Hollywood is essentially reaching its least creative nadir, for while promising franchise movies like Batman vs. Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy: Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars Episode VII sit on the horizon, studios are equally busy deciding which classic movie series they can crassly reboot. The whole notion behind a reboot is typically either a) retooling something that didn't quite work the first time, or is not culturally relevant anymore or b) milking another generation of kids of their money, because they've never seen and likely never heard of the original movie. It's a dubious practice at the best of times, and one that rarely fosters much excitement from those old enough to have seen the original movies. These 10 franchises have been toying with and rumoured to be getting the reboot treatment over the years, and in each case, it really is inevitable. Hollywood just needs to make sure to listen to these pointers on how not to make them suck...

10. Mortal Kombat

The Original: Paul W.S. Anderson's supremely cheesy yet thoroughly entertaining adaptation of Midway's classic video game series. It effortlessly captured the style and tone of the games, and is not only one of Anderson's best films, but it has also become something of a cult classic. The sequel Anderson released in 1997, however, was not, and is generally regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. How To Make It Not Suck: Make it gritty, not cheesy; times have changed since this sort of corniness was acceptable and even encouraged. Word is that Kevin Tancharoen, who directed the excellent Mortal Kombat short film Rebirth, is tapped to helm the movie, which is a hugely encouraging sign, given that Paul W.S. Anderson's current effects-onslaught brand of filmmaking would not suit the material at all. Now it just seems to be a case of getting the thing actually shooting, which I'll believe when I see it.
