The Concept: Despite hiring numerous other concept artists to work on designing The Joker for his 1989 Batman, it is director Tim Burton's own design which has proven the most startling and disturbing. Kitted out in a cumbersome hat and raincoat, complete with a loose-fitting scarf, sunglasses and a freakishly angular face, his Joker certainly achieves it aim of scaring the living crap out of us. Why It's Too Extreme: This monstrosity will haunt the dreams of just about any adult who sets their eyes upon it, let alone children. Considering that these movies were trying to sell merchandise to kids (or, rather, their parents), this Joker would have just been too grotesque and creepy to be commercial, and it's easy to imagine the movie's $411 million box office cume going down the toilet if Burton refused to budge on his brilliant yet inappropriate design. Instead, we got a campier Joker from Jack Nicholson that, while still undeniably creepy, was at least playful enough that he didn't quite invade as many kids' dreams.
