10 Legacy Sequel Movies Everyone Actually Wants To See
It's time for The Mummy franchise to come back.
One of Hollywood's most dogged movie trends right now is the "legacy sequel" - that is, a belated follow-up to a classic film that pairs the beloved original cast with young up-and-comers for an exercise in franchise extension.
When it works well, you get something like Creed, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, or the recent Top Gun: Maverick, but when it falls flat, you end up with an Independence Day: Resurgence or Jurassic World: Dominion.
Legacy sequels can so easily feel like cynical attempts to dig up stagnant IP in the pursuit of easy, nostalgia-splashed profits, but when they're created with respect for the original and a contemporary creative spark, they can truly deepen and expand a franchise in gratifying ways.
And so, while Hollywood is busy pilfering every dormant movie series it can think of for a legacy sequel, here are 10 that film fans are actually desperate to see.
From beloved franchises that truly deserve a comeback to one-off movies that fans still want to see more of, these legacy follow-ups have as good a chance as any of actually succeeding...
10. Spider-Man 4
The immense popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home of course prompted insatiable fans to consider the possibility of either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield starring in their own belated Spider-Man sequels.
The obviously safer choice of the two would be Maguire given the far greater popularity of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, and the fact that a fourth Spider-Man film was actually in the works following the release of Spider-Man 3 (though ultimately nixed once Raimi walked away).
A fourth Maguire-starring Spider-Man film, catching up with a now middle-aged Peter Parker and showing how his universe has changed over the last 15+ years, would certainly be a box office smash regardless of its quality.
Maguire and his MJ, Kirsten Dunst, have both expressed interest in the idea, though Raimi has stated that he hasn't got any immediate interest in the project.
It's basically a coin flip as to whether or not this actually happens, but with No Way Home confirming the audience thirst for more from the legacy Spider-Man characters, Kevin Feige would surely love to make it happen.
