8. Good Bye, Lenin!

Good Bye, Lenin! is living proof that the stereotype of Germans having no sense of humor is deeply flawed. While this is more of a dramedy than a mile a minute laughfest, it has more than its share of very funny moments. Jokes about Cold War era East Germany might not be the obvious way to go, but they work here. Good Bye, Lenin! is about a young man whose mother has a heart attack and ends up in a coma just before the Berlin Wall falls and Germany begins the long, painful process of reunification. When she finally wakes up, her doctor warns him that any shock could literally kill her. So he starts going crazy making sure that his mother sees none of the obvious traces of the Western world that have quickly become commonplace where they live. Rather than poking fun at the former Soviet bloc, it treats their former lifestyles with a sort of bittersweet nostalgia while still acknowledging its inherent flaws. You might like Good Bye, Lenin! if: you're familiar with Daniel Brühl from his work in Rush and Inglourious Basterds, and you want to see the movie that jump-started his career.
