10 Messed Up '80s Horror Movies That Must Be Seen To Be Believed
2. The New York Ripper
Lucio Fulci made some messed up films like The Beyond and City of the Living Dead, but The New York Ripper has got to be his strangest movie ever. The story is pretty simple, following a serial killer going around New York City slicing people up and a police detective investigating the murder.
So what makes it unique? Well, a few things. For one, the movie is shockingly brutal, one of the most grisly exploitation films ever made. People don't just get killed; they die while screaming in agony in scenes that go on and on and on. While Jason might stab someone with a knife and they yell and collapse, in The New York Ripper, they're stabbed over and over as blood shoots everywhere and they beg for mercy. It's a sadistic movie, and it's no wonder it was banned all around the world. In the UK, the BBFC ordered all prints to be removed from the country. It's that messed up.
Despite how gruesome it all is, there's one element that makes it unintentionally comedic: the killer talks like Daffy Duck. Seriously. It's not just a one time thing, either. He talks like that all throughout the movie. Who's idea was this? Any time you find yourself horrified by what you're seeing, the quacking sound of the ripper instantly turns that fear into laughter.
