David Fincher is another director who is extremely skilled at picking pieces of music that suit whatever is taking place on screen. Donovan's haunting classic rock tune Hurdy Gurdy Man plays over the radio of a car as the couple inside it are flirting, before they realise that someone appears to be following them. What seemed like a chilled out rock track now takes on a whole other tone with the sinister shots of a car riding back and forth, reaching an apex when the Zodiac killer pulls up behind them, gets out and begins his assault. With the first gunshot, Fincher ratchets up the volume and the song's fantastic solo only intensifies what we're seeing on-screen, as Zodiac efficiently murders the female occupant of the car and severely wounds the male. Donovan's creepy lyrics return just as Zodiac leaves the scene, making this one of the eeriest openings to any thriller in movie history. An opening scene should set the tone for what is to follow, and this totally does that.
