Along with the Infinity Wars, the other big possibility for an epic cinematic story was the Civil War arc, which pitted superhero against superhero. Now this story looks to be full realised - or at least begun - in the third Captain America movie. One of the seeds of that story line was sown back in The Avengers. When Agent Coulson handed Tony Stark several files to read, there was a reference to Project Pegasus and Project 42. In the Civil War story arc Stark builds an extra-dimensional prison for villains called Project 42, built on the site marked Project Pegasus. As to how much of this translates into the cinematic Civil War story line remains to be seen, but this moment in The Avengers certainly foreshadowed the dramatic events years before they begun.
