Following his capture at the hands of the terrorist group the Ten Rings (and subsequent escape), Tony Stark returns home to America, makes the decision to shut down his company's weapons division and begins building a more high-tech version of the suit he used to escape in the first place. The Mark II armour, as it would be known, was more lightweight, streamlined and less bulky than the crude version he built in the cave in Afghanistan and enabled Stark to fly quickly and with accurate direction, granted him super-strength and durability and possessed offensive weapons such as missiles. Donning the new armour, Stark returned to the village in which he was held captive. He takes out the terrorists - who were using civilians as human shields - using his advanced targeting system and leaves the man in charge for the villagers to do what they please with. Then a tank fires at him. He casually dodges it before firing a missile at it from his arm. At that point, he turns and walks away slowly as the missile hits the tank and blows it up without him even bothering to watch.
