9. Pan's Labyrinth

Though not exclusively, the vast majority of Guillermo del Toro's movies have featured some form of non-human element, be it ghosts, wooden dolls, kaijus, or even one of the most famous monsters in the history of all fiction. Not all, however, were created equal.

Of course, the likes of Hellboy, Pinocchio, and Frankenstein's monster played major roles in their respective outings, but on the complete other end of that spectrum is The Pale Man, an incredibly small part of Pan's Labyrinth that left a huge impression.

It wouldn't be exaggerating to say that the creature is easily the most memorable part of the whole piece, which in itself is incredible given that there is only around five minutes of screen time, but with an image as unsettling and creepy as this one, it's not that surprising. 

This entry is slightly different to the rest on this list, because it is not the movie that audiences weren't ready for, but rather the singular monster within it. The Pale Man, played by del Toro's frequent collaborator Doug Jones, projects a harrowing image while eating two characters in the middle of a film that in no way prepared anyone for such a scene.
