10 MORE Horror Movie Monsters That Shouldn’t Have Worked… But Did
8. Razorback - Razorback
The unprecedented popularity of Jaws saw a splurge of nature-based horrors, involving killer bears, snakes, and alligators.
Then there's Razorback, which revolves around a murderous boar the size of a van. Although pigs aren't exactly an apex predator, the Aussie thriller is among the better creature features from the '80s.
Director Russell Mulcahy understood that one of the reasons Jaws left an impact was because it didn't overuse the shark. Even though the titular pig in Razorback looks top-notch, Mulcahy embraced the "less is more" philosophy. As a result, viewers only catch glimpses, making the tusked tyrant come across less like a wild animal and more like a mythical beast. Instead of showing the horrendous hog directly tearing jeeps open or smashing through power plants, the action fixates on the victims, giving viewers a front-row seat to the impending horror.
Now, it's possible Mulcahy's decision to limit the pig's screentime wasn't an artistic choice but due to budget or technical limitations. After all, having a pig animatronic ripping a car in half would be chaos to coordinate.
Either way, it was the right move since Razorback is still regarded as an underrated gem.
