10 More Horror Movies So Sad You Can Only Watch Them Once

4. Antichrist

Lars von Trier's Antichrist may have received a ton of media attention for its sexual violence and frankly wild imagery, but it's also the clear work of a person who understands depression.

Hell, it's the first entry into von Trier's so-called "Depression Trilogy," followed by Melancholia and Nymphomaniac.

Antichrist revolves around a couple (Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg) whose young son falls to his death in the movie's very opening scene, setting them on a grief-fuelled course of brutal antagonism against one another.

Simply, Antichrist is a misery fiesta that's among the most profoundly sad horror movies ever made.

Like Don't Look Now, it examines how grief can obliterate a relationship like a sledgehammer, though very unlike Don't Look Now, it features extreme genital mutilation.

Between this and the movie's generally oppressive, unrelentingly grim nature, it is absolutely one where a single viewing will be enough for all but the most masochistic of audience members.
