9. Johnny Depp - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Whatever your opinion on Johnny Depp's take on Willy Wonka, there's no denying it was a controversial albeit much-expected choice from director Tim Burton (who casts the actor in most everything he makes these days). From the minute that first trailer dropped, fans were divided, with Depp's curious inspiration for the character - opting to try and channel Michael Jackson of all people - making for a quirky, certainly unforgettable character who was also more than a little bit creepy. To be fair to Depp, whoever was cast in the role was going to have trouble convincing those who grew up with and love the Gene Wilder version; it's such an iconic role that Wilder made completely his own, and Depp did his damndest to, to his credit, go in a completely different direction with it. It's a left-field bit of casting that yielded a bizarre, intoxicating result, even if it completely departs from what Wonka was in the books.
