3. The Penguin's Rubber Duck Boat - Batman Returns

To complain about ridiculousness in Tim Burton's Batman Returns is sort of missing the point, but really, there's a lot about Danny DeVito's portrayal of The Penguin that's great; his imposing demeanour, his voice, his make-up, his clothes, and even things like him being raised by penguins and having an army of rocket launcher-clad penguins didn't bother me. Where I draw the line, however, is with the gigantic, yellow rubber duck that he uses to traverse Gotham's sewer system. It's one of those things that's just too silly to cohere with Tim Burton's otherwise pretty dark vision; the back story about him and the penguins transforms from silly into something that's unexpectedly sombre and a little moving, whereas the giant yellow duck is just too out there. If you can hold back cringing at this, then I applaud you.
