4. The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

Expectation: A romantic comedy/sci-fi in which our couple finds their first date to be more disastrous than most, given that the the world is due to end at midnight? Or a romantic comedy/sci-fi in which our couple finds their first date to be colder than most, given that they are somehow cryogenically frozen and arise at some point in the future? Reality: Geena Davis recovers from a bout of retrograde amnesia just in time to alert private investigator Samuel L. Jackson that her past is coming back to haunt her. She's a government assassin, you see, and a convict known as ''One-Eyed'' Jack has suddenly tracked her down. If only those CIA skills could find their way back to her as well. They can? Cool! It being a Shane Black script, no scene goes without a wisecrack and/or explosion and it becomes difficult to tell whether the movies it references are being ridiculed or revered. But Thelma and Jules, now that's a crossover we'd pay to see.
