After Black Christmas and Halloween secured the slasher sub-genre, we've had a deluge of horror flicks revolving around masked serial killers racking up an impressive kill count, often without rhyme or reason.
Although most killers are pretty creative with how they perform the deed, they're pretty straightforward. Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and other like-minded maniacs usually slay their victims quickly and efficiently. After all, there's no need to hang about longer than one has to, since it runs the risk of getting caught.
But there are a couple of deranged psychopaths who don't just want their prey to die - they need them to suffer. Antagonists with this mindset will drag out their victim's demise to guarantee their last remaining moments tethered to this world are etched with unimaginable agony.
Even if the villain has the opportunity to perform a quick death, some will use an elaborate method to kill to ensure their victim's pain threshold is at its limit before shuffling off their mortal coil. As tragic as it was to watch these characters to die, it was more horrifying because of how excruciating their deaths were.
10. The Kidney - Urban Legends: Final Cut
In Urban Legends: Final Cut, a group of film school students discover there's a serial killer on the loose, whose murders are inspired by urban legends. Since the "kidney removal in the bathtub" is among the most famous contemporary legends, it's no surprise when one of student, Lisa, suffers this fate. Sadly, she also endures the most unbearable death.
After waking up in a bath filled with ice, Lisa feels a fresh wound on her back, and realises someone has surgically removed her kidney. When she learns her captor is in the adjacent room, she attempts to escape through the window.
As the killer bursts into the room, he grabs Lisa by the legs, trying to pull her back in. Out of desperation, she grabs onto a barbwire fence outside, slashing her hands. Refusing to let her go, Lisa's abductor bores his hand into her fresh wound. As you watch Lisa writhing in agony as the killer squeezes her insides, it's challenging not to avert your gaze.
While Lisa tries to squirms free, she shatters the glass of the window, until only a jagged shard remains. The killer then slams the window down, causing the glass to cut off Lisa's scream as well as her head.
