Most modern cineastes are well aware of the technique of blue screening in order to insert one image into another. Nowadays, in the digital age, filmmakers tend to use green screen more than blue due to technical issues over non-analog colour mapping; but many film fans might not realize how far back the principal of such chroma key technology actually goes. In fact the technique was first developed by S/FX pioneer Larry Butler while working on the 1940 Arabian Nights fantasy, The Thief of Bagdad. The scenes he created included Aladdins genie friend being released from his bottle, flying carpet rides and flying horses: which certainly makes this film a landmark moment in cinema.
