Every year, as soon as the calendar hits October, the mood shifts. Summer is over and it's time for spooky season. The nights get longer and darker, so what better way to celebrate Halloween than give yourself a good fright with a scary movie?

There's classics like Halloween or A Nightmare On Elm Street for those who like a good movie monster to check under the bed for before going to sleep. For those who like a supernatural flavour for their scares, there's Paranormal Activity or Sinister, for example. The choices are endless and there's plenty of variety to keep you entertained for the whole of October.

However, what if you don't want to be scared so badly you can't sleep? Perhaps you like a bit of humour or slapstick to offset the macabre. If that's the case, then you aren't left wanting.

There's plenty of horror movies that dip their toes in to the comedic side of the pool, and there's some that dive headfirst. The results are a mixed bag, and some manage to walk the line perfectly. On the other hand, there's some that might go too far and are downright ridiculous.

10. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil

The horror genre has a laundry list of tropes and cliches a mile long, and fans have come to love them. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil is keenly aware of these and subverts all expectations. Watching this film, horror fans will feel like part of an exclusive club, thanks to all the meta references.

The premise sounds familiar; a group of teens venture out camping in the wilderness and things begin to go very wrong for them. Usually, the two hillbillies living in a rundown cabin in the middle of nowhere would be the prime suspects, but not this time. Instead, Tucker and Dale are sweethearts, just looking to fix up their dream home.

The teens having watched too many horror movies themselves, mark them as deranged killers due to unfortunate misunderstandings and coincidences that play out during the movie.

The situations that play out are hilarious, and the titular characters are genuinely endearing that you can't help but feel bad for them. It flips horror on its head, and does so in tremendous fashion.
