3. "Never Let Me Go" By Jane Monheit (Never Let Me Go)
In general, Mark Romanek's "Never Let Me Go" is a pretty underrated film. That being said, it is really no surprise that the most important song in this film was, for awhile, scarce to be found even on the Internet. Made famous in the story by the fictional Judy Bridgewater, "Never Let Me Go" is the song that represents finding love for the first time, when the whole idea of the feeling is restricted. Kathy, played by Carey Mulligan, discovers the tape in a sort-of yard sale provided to the special academy she attends. She plays the song on her tape player next to her bed, trying to imagine what it feels like to dance with someone. The song featured in the film is actually a recording collaboration between the film's score composer Rachel Portman and American jazz vocalist Jane Monheit. "Never Let Me Go" is the exact kind of song one hopes to find digging through used records or tapes. Swelling strings and a voice of sweet desperation, it encapsulates everything shaped out in the script, as well as Kazuo Ishiguro's original story. For some reason, this song was not only left out of any award recognition, but it's not even that easy to access. However, its secrecy makes it all the more of a gem when it pops up in the film.
