After the abomination of Sylvester Stallone's "interpretation" of Judge Dredd, which mostly remolded the character and the comics lore to fit his existing on-screen persona and 1990s action expectations, the famous comic book creation was in need of the TLC of a fan willing to pay their respects through adaptation.

Via a heavy lean on the spirit and story of The Raid, original director Pete Travis and very hands-on writer/producer Alex Garland, who oversaw the edit when Travis' creative control was rescinded made something far more fitting of the comic source material. With Karl Urban's stoic Dredd and a delightful turn from Lena Headey as villain Ma-Ma, Garland's vision traded off some of the stranger elements of the comic to keep costs down, but that made for a more grounded story that established the universe far more intimately.

Unfortunately, it made no money and its post-release story has been all about fans trying to get a follow-up made. Unsuccessfully, sadly.
