10 Movie Characters We'd Share a Desert Island With

By Andy Scott /

10. Ed Bloom €“ Big Fish

Perhaps a strange choice to begin with but there€™s method beyond the mundane. Every group needs a paternal figure. In most cases it€™s the undertaking of the group elder but, in this case, either young Ned Bloom or Old Ed Bloom would fare just as well. A mixture of his paternal nature plus the fact that he is arguably the best storytelling movie character, based on his desire to tell a good story over a true one, would place him firmly in this category. The oft-named €˜Father of History€™ was the 5th Century BC writer Herodotus who, modern-day historians waste no time in telling you, €˜never let the truth get in the way of a good story€™. This is the valuable role Ed Bloom would play on our desert island. As well as these innate character perfections, he has an intrepid sense of adventure. Since we€™re indulging our fantasies here there€™ll be the assumption that we are a) on the desert island of our own accord and b) it€™s big enough to accommodate a considerable measure of intrigue and adventure. For which, Ed Bloom would be a worthy companion.
