3. Let The Right One In (2008)

In early 80s Sweden, a young boy named Oskar, tormented by school bullies, befriends a strange new neighbor, Eli, who€™s just moved into the same complex with her father. Eli states in a very matter of fact way €œwe can€™t be friends.€ Oskar and Eli slowly develop a great affection for each other as she instructs him on how to fight back against the violent school bullies. It turns out Eli is a vampire, and the man posing as her father, Hakan, is a pedophile. Hakan botches a murder, meant to feed Eli, so badly he has to disfigure himself in order not to threaten Eli€™s existence. Why It's A Gem: This is an atmospheric, fresh take on an overexposed genre staple, the vampire. The gorgeous cinematography grants an air of muted horror behind the chilling, budding love story of a child and an eternally childlike vampire.
