8. Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Though 2016's Paul Feig-directed all-female Ghostbusters reboot was intended to reinvigorate the franchise for a new generation, it bombed at the box office despite broadly positive reviews, with audiences quite blatantly rejecting the idea of a new Ghostbusters that ignores the original two.
Once the whiff of Feig's film had dissipated, Sony announced a direct sequel to 1989's Ghostbusters II, focused on Egon's grandkids (Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace) as they uncover their grandpa's legacy, with the adult roles filled out by Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon.
The hook? Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver are all back in supporting roles, in what's clearly being fashioned as a Force Awakens-esque passing of the torch reboot-sequel.
Was It Worth The Wait?
The movie doesn't release until July 10, but the first trailer was encouraging enough, and while it's sensible not to expect huge appearances from the original Ghostbusters crew, their returning presence alone should hopefully allow for a poignant changing of the guard.
With a far lower budget than the bloated, $144 million 2016 movie, Afterlife sensibly seems like a more modest, character-driven sequel, as opposed to a CGI-heavy tentpole with its sights set on a billion-dollar payday.
